Black Hills and the Badlands, South Dakota

Why: Lunar landscapes, close-up views of wildlife, and colorful history.

Tasty treat: Native American tacos (fried bread covered with traditional fixings).
Top outing: Visiting the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, where the remains of nearly 50 of these woolly giants have been unearthed from a prehistoric sinkhole.

Where to stay: Spend half your visit in an enchanting mountain lodge in Custer State Park and the other half in a wood-frame cabin at the rustic Cedar Pass Lodge in Badlands National Park.

Don't leave without: Purchasing a piece of the locally famous green- and red-tinted "Black Hills gold."

Don't miss: The nightly "Bank Robbery and Shoot Out" reenactment on Main Street in Hill City.
