Macaulay Museum of Dental History

Swing by the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina for a peek into the world of one of the most devoted dentists in America.

Dr. Neill W. Macaulay's (1904-1983) dental feats included time as a dental corpsman during World War II, service as secretary of the South Carolina Dental Association and as a member of the Board of Dental Examiners, as well as authorship of the Centennial History of the South Carolina Dental Association His dental collection includes a treadle-powered dental drill, circa 1871, which provided dentists with a solid rotary cutting device for removing decay from patients' teeth. Ouch. Other toothy treasures are an exhibit of early instruments, including one designed and made by Paul Revere. 175 Ashley Ave, corner of Ashley and Bee St., Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, tel. 843/792-2288.
