Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Why: A charming coastal town with a slow pace and plenty of history.

Tasty treat: A pint of house-brewed Old Brown Dog Ale at the Portsmouth Brewery.

Top outing: Strolling through the 10-acre Strawbery Banke Museum section of downtown, where you can rub elbows with colonial ghosts, revel in Victorian opulence, and see America through new eyes.

Where to stay: At the historic Inn at Christian Shore, curled up in front of one of the massive, original fireplaces.

Don't leave without: Hopping a ferry for Smuttynose Island, where colorful legends of piracy and murder abound.

Don't miss: The challenge of dropping by the 70 historic sites along the Harbour Trail, including the 1817 U.S. Custom House and the Old County Jail.
